Internet dating: the wave of the future. However, one of the major concerns is safety. How can you meet people on the internet and make sure you’re really safe while doing it?

First of all, realize that while most people on the internet are telling the truth, there are some who are not. When you first meet someone, always be wary that they may not be who they say they are – have a healthy suspicion. It’s okay to exchange screen names, email addresses, ages, general locations, even pictures. But don’t tell anyone your full name, your home address, your phone number, or any other identifying information, especially not in a first conversation.

As you talk to someone for the first time, pay attention to what they say. Do they talk about themselves sometimes, or do they only ask questions about you? If they’re asking all about you and not revealing much personal information, that might be a sign that they’re not who they say they are. If they talk about meeting you soon, your “future” together, or anything sexual, close the message and walk away. The person may be desperate or dangerous.
